In 2009, I went travelling around the European continent for the third time. This trip was by far the most adventurous of the three I'd done up to then, with (I admit) me aiming to tick off as many remaining European countries as possible. I flew out to Warsaw, headed east into Belarus, and then south towards Istanbul in Turkey. From there it was across the Balkans to Albania, a week or so spent drifting up the Adriatic coast, a ferry across to Italy to grab the microstate of San Marino, and then down to Malta for a few days in the sunshine.
